Pan Delta Super Racing Festival
Definition and Historical Evolution
The Pan Delta Super Racing Festival is a comprehensive motorsport event established by Zhuhai International Circuit in 2005, standing as China's first grassroots racing festival. Designed to deliver an entertaining and thrilling motorsport spectacle accessible to nationwide audiences, it ushered in a new era of grassroots accessibility and mass appeal for Chinese motorsport. The festival also carries the mission of promoting the rich motorsport culture of the Pearl River Delta region (particularly Hong Kong and Macau) across the whole of China.
Event Schedule and Venue
Since 2008, the festival has adopted a fixed calendar, staging three race rounds annually across spring, summer, and autumn in March, June, and September at Zhuhai International Circuit. Built in 1996 as China's first permanent motorsport circuit, the venue provides a solid infrastructure foundation for the Pan Delta series.
Event Structure and Core Categories
The Pan Delta Super Racing Festival brings together formula racing, touring cars, motorcycle racing, and drifting, making it China's only motorsport event to integrate all four major disciplines into a single weekend. Its flagship "Circuit Hero" series emphasises accessible, low-cost racing, with race car modification costs starting from around RM50,000 and an entry fee of RM2,100 per round, aimed at attracting grassroots racing enthusiasts. Over the years, Circuit Hero has evolved into multiple classes, including Supercar, Circuit Hero-One (2.0T), Circuit Hero-Two (2.0 Naturally Aspirated), Circuit Hero-Three (1.6-litre Naturally Aspirated), and Drifting. Meanwhile, "Speed Hero" remains the festival's mainstay motorcycle racing category.
Event Highlights and Participation Scale
The festival is renowned for its low barrier to entry and vibrant carnival atmosphere. The Circuit Hero series initially accepted entries only from domestic drivers, aiming to transition street racers from the Pearl River Delta onto proper race circuits. With grids packing up to 42 race cars battling on track simultaneously, it has drawn a huge number of amateur racers from Hong Kong, Macau, and the Mainland. By 2023, Pan Delta had cumulatively attracted over 5,300 drivers, with on-site attendance exceeding 1.16 million spectators[citation:40]. The event also features interactive fan zones complete with pit walks, go-karting experiences, and catering services, turning grandstand visitors into active participants rather than mere onlookers.
International Recognition and Accolades
In 2016, selected categories (Circuit Hero-One and Circuit Hero-Two) were approved by the FIA and FIM, upgrading them to international regional event status. In December 2020, the Pan Delta Super Racing Festival was officially awarded the title of Guangdong Sports Industry Demonstration Project. The spectator demographic has also shifted from 70% local Zhuhai residents to 70% out-of-town visitors, drawing motorsport fans from Guangxi, Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, and other regions to experience this racing carnival.
Significance and Impact
Over nearly two decades of development, the Pan Delta Super Racing Festival has grown into one of the most influential brand events in China's motorsport industry, widely regarded as the benchmark for domestic regional events. More than just a race meet, it is an automotive carnival fusing car tuning culture, track driving experiences, and lifestyle entertainment, playing an essential role in driving the popularisation of Chinese motorsport and fostering grassroots racing culture.
